Minecraft mods: installation, compatibility, and common questions
Minecraft mods can add new gameplay, simplify everyday tasks, or change how the game renders. For Java Edition, a working setup depends on more than downloading a file: the Minecraft version, mod loader, and required libraries all need to match the mod's requirements.
How do you install Minecraft mods in Java Edition?
For a typical loader-based mod, install the loader first and add the mod's .jar file to that installation's mods folder. Use a separate game directory for a new setup so its files stay apart from other profiles. Launchers with built-in mod management may handle these steps for you.
The relevant folder is the one used by the profile you actually launch. If you keep several installations, copying a file into another profile's mods folder will not add it to the active game. Give profiles clear names that include their Minecraft version and loader, and use your launcher's folder controls when available.
- Choose your Minecraft version and install the Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge version required by the mod.
- Download the matching mod file and any required dependencies from the creator's official release page or an established distribution platform.
- Close the game and place the .jar files in your chosen game directory's mods folder. Keep them as .jar files rather than extracting them.
